Working areas may include any of the three adult Medical/Surgical Wards within Madigan Army Medical Center where nurses with general Medical/Surgical skills are needed. Work schedules consist of 8, 10, and/or 12-hour shifts with a 30-minute non-paid lunch or dinner break. Contract RNs/ Health Care Providers (HCPs) will be scheduled 72-80 hours each two week payroll period. Contract RNs shall perform essentially the same services as those required by any Army or Government service RN of similar experience and in similar duty assignments. Therefore, while specific tasks are outlined, responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:  Use of various MAMC clinical automation systems as required, such as, but not limited to CHCS (Composite Health Care System) and DMHRSi (Defense Medical Human Resource Internet). Assess patients and plan for their appropriate nursing care. Obtain patient history; document plan of care and care given in patient medical records. Utilize appropriate medical personnel to assist in delivery of care when indicated. Transcribe or verify transcription of physician orders. Carry out prescribed physician orders and document patient medical record. Communicate pertinent patient data to charge nurse and/or physician as appropriate. Reassess patient’s condition and revise plan of care based on identified nursing problems. Obtain and input patient acuity data. Administer medications when certified to do so by MAMC. Operate defibrillator (when directed by physician), EKG machine and cardiac monitor. Participate in discharge planning as appropriate. Provide technical direction to paraprofessional caregivers.  Assist in the stabilization and transportation of patients as required. Communicate in a caring, professional manner with patients, families, visitors and staff. Obtain patient history and pertinent family history. Assess patient/family knowledge level, develops and implements a plan of instruction and documents demonstrated level of understanding; assessment plans will be targeted at age specific needs. Assess patient and plan for appropriate nursing care; administer medications and blood products with the knowledge of actions and usual dosages of commonly used drugs; initiation of anti-cancer chemotherapy drugs are excluded unless nurse has obtained appropriate documented certification in cancer chemotherapeutic drugs and administration. Details: Job Summary:  Provides care and support to patients under the direction of the physician and/or mid-level provider.  Contributes to the planning and delivery of patient focused care.  Essential Duties:Greet and prepare patients for practitioner.  Obtain and record vital signs and other appropriate information, such as height, weight, drug allergies, current medications and presenting problem. Screens, communicates and responds to patient needs appropriately.Manage patient flow ensuring enough time for patient and family education.Assist with diagnostic tests and clinical procedures to appropriate level of training and established procedures. Ensure patient privacy and comfort during the exam; instruct patients in the collection of samples and other tests.  Ensure that patient or family understands follow-up and referral information. Provide patient mobility assistance, as necessary.Document procedures and interactions in patient's medical record.Prepare, clean and sterilize instruments and maintain equipment; keep patient exam rooms clean and orderly; dispose of contaminated items according to Franciscan Medical Group Exposure Control Plan; anticipate Practitioner's needs for medications, supplies and equipment and plan accordingly. Actively participate in continuing education, meetings, and participates with committees as requested. Participants in professional development activities and maintains professional affiliations. Under supervision of the practitioner, inform patients of lab results, call in prescriptions to pharmacies and return practitioners' phone messages. Uses Standard Precautions including personal protective equipment for anticipated contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials. Under supervision of practitioner or nurse supervisor, administer approved medications via oral, subcutaneous, intramuscular or intradermal routes. Perform other duties as assigned by lead and/or supervisor.
